Northern Pike Invading Alaska
In Alaska the Northern Pike (Esox Lucius) have been native to the northern and western portions of Alaska. The Northern pike is not native to the southern regions and waters. South referring to south central Alaska and the southeast watersheds which are the native home of young salmon.
The Invasion. The north has invaded the south by means of the great northern pike. Alaska has a civil war on it’s hands. This is caused by the illegal introduction of pike to the southern waters and water sheds. This has the possibility of reeking havoc on the ecosystem not
to mention hurting economically the import fishing industry. Pike are not only predators they are cannibals which viciously attack their prey which include small animals, rodents, and birds. Pike will also feed on juvenile salmon. Having these predators in the southern waters can cause a very big problem, one that the ADFG (Alaskan Department Of Fish And Game) is trying to solve through various measure and programs.
The following measures have been taken to reduce and hopefully put an end to the invaders from the north. Netting programs have begun in the attempt to locate the pike and reintroduce them back to the northern and western regions. Stricter fishing regulations have been set in a hopes to eliminate the problem also. The Alaskan Department Of Fish And Game is looking to inform the public and educate them on the consequences of illegal introduction of these fish and the harm this can cause. The ADFG also hopes to form a support group.
